Built on an ancient Indian shell mound, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was erected on what once was a thriving Indian community on the Loxahatchee River. It is the oldest existing structure in Palm Beach County. As it was first lit in 1860, just as the Civil War began, a group of Confederate sympathizers, including some of the Lighthouse Keepers, sneaked into the tower and removed parts of the lamp and the revolving machinery. They rendered it unusable. The light was never lit throughout the war.
