As waves crash along the rocks in front of the old lifesaving station, one can imagine just what a comforting sight that must have been to a shipwrecked mariner of long ago. The shoreline was barren and devoid of any civilization, nothing like it is today. Now The House of Refuge is the only remaining station of the original ten, that were commissioned by the US Treasury Department as sanctuary for wayward sailors along the desolate east coast of Florida. My, how things change.
